Helping you care for your chinnie

Skin parasites and fungus

The only skin problem we ever encountered was Ringworm. Ringworm is a fungus that grows on the chinchilla’s skin. Symptoms are fur loss and red, flaky skin. It is also itchy and the chinchilla will try to scratch it. It normally occurs around the eyes, on the nose and sometimes on the ears and tail.  Causes of ringworm are high humidity and infected hay. It is also contagious and can be transmitted from mother to kits. From our experience it is normally the lighter colored chinchillas that are more susceptible to it. Luckily it is very easy to treat and does not present a danger to the general health of the chinchilla if treated timeously. Just apply Ringworm Ointment to the affected areas once a week until the infection is gone.We never had any other skin parasite or fungus problems but remember that if something looks wrong it probably is (Murphy’s Law).
