Eye infection is sometimes a very quick killer of chinchillas. One of the most common causes for this is injury to the eye. Again a safe environment is crucial. Sometimes with eye infections, abscesses forms behind the eye and the infection rapidly spreads to the brain. By that time it is normally too late to save the chinchilla.Symptoms to look out for are a milky or any abnormal discharge from the eye. The eye can be swollen or kept shut by the chinchilla. It can also continuously try to rub the eye with its paws. We lost one of our first Beige chinchillas to eye infection within 24 hours because we were uninformed. Never take chances with eye infections. There are some recommended home remedies but we rather trust our vet.
